Background: After the reign of King Solomon and his disobedience to God in the latter part of his life, God’s people are split into a northern and southern kingdom. A long line of kings come and go as rulers over each kingdom. Most of these kings do not follow the Lord and God punishes these kingdoms as a result. During this period, God raises up a great prophet named Elijah. Elijah predicts to evil King Ahab that a drought will come upon the whole land and after he speaks this word, the rain stops and the crops die and the people begin to starve.
Ask the children…
Now God causes the prophet Elijah to live with a widow and her son. Finally the widow runs out of food and tells Elijah she can’t feed him any more. What does Elijah tell her?
“But Elijah said to her, ‘Don’t be afraid! Go ahead and do just what you’ve said, but make a little bread for me first. Then use what’s left to prepare a meal for yourself and your son. 14 For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: There will always be flour and olive oil left in your containers until the time when the Lord sends rain and the crops grow again!’” (1 Kings 17:13, 14)
So by faith this widow bakes the small loaf of bread with her last flour. What miracle does God do then?
“So she did as Elijah said, and she and Elijah and her family continued to eat for many days. 16 There was always enough flour and olive oil left in the containers, just as the Lord had promised through Elijah.” (1 Kings 17:15, 16)
God always comes through on His promises. He is so concerned about one widow that He makes her flour and oil not run out. This happend because she trusted God at His word even though it would take a miracle for God to fulfill His promise.
Share with your children how God has miraculously provided for you and your family. Ask your children if they have seen God work miraculously in their lives? Ask them where they need a miracle in their lives right now? Stop and pray and ask God how they can walk by faith and believe God for that miracle even before it has occurred.
