One Year Study Thru The Bible For Children – March 29, 2 Samuel 18

This one year study thru the Bible for kids is designed to hit the highlights and provide practical application. I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (2 Samuel 18 ) while we focus in on just a few verses.

Background: As wise and brave as King David was, apparently he wasn’t the greatest father. His son Absalom won over the hearts of the people and rebelled against David and David had to flee to the wilderness. Absalom however had one huge weak spot, he was a prideful man and like another Bible character, Samson, his hair was his downfall.

Ask the children…

What was so amazing about Absalom’s hair?

“Now Absalom was praised as the most handsome man in all Israel. He was flawless from head to foot. 26 He cut his hair only once a year, and then only because it was so heavy. When he weighed it out, it came to five pounds!” (2 Samuel 14:25, 26)

While Absalom and his arm were fighting against David and his men, what happened to Absalom?

“During the battle, Absalom happened to come upon some of David’s men. He tried to escape on his mule, but as he rode beneath the thick branches of a great tree, his hair[c] got caught in the tree. His mule kept going and left him dangling in the air.” (2 Samuel 18:9)

What had been a source of pride for Absalom now became his downfall.  He was caught in a tree hanging by his hair and couldn’t do a thing about it.  The Bible says, “Pride goes before destruction” and it was true for Absalom here.

It is the same for all of us.  Pride will be our downfall if we let it be.

Ask your children if there is something about their appearance or their abilities or accomplishments that they are taking pride in?  Encourage them to take it to the Lord as an offering to God and to thank God that they have whatever He has given them.
