. I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (1 Samuel 1) while we focus in on just a few verses.

Background: After the taking of their Promised Land under the leadership of Joshua, the nation of Israel fell into rebellion and were defeated by their enemies. During that time God sent Judges (leaders) to help them. The very last Judge was a man named Samuel. But Samuel’s story begins with his mother, Hannah.  She was childless and upset about it and we pick up when she is praying hard at the Tabernacle (God’s temporary house) during her yearly trip to Jerusalem.

Ask the children…

What did Hannah pray for and what was her vow?

“And she made this vow: ‘O Lord of Heaven’s Armies, if you will look upon my sorrow and answer my prayer and give me a son, then I will give him back to you. He will be yours for his entire lifetime, and as a sign that he has been dedicated to the Lord, his hair will never be cut.’” (1 Samuel 1:11)

And what to God do for Hannah?

“When Elkanah slept with Hannah, the Lord remembered her plea, 20 and in due time she gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel,[f] for she said, ‘I asked the Lord for him.’”  (1 Samuel 1:19, 20)

God answered Hannah’s prayer and Hannah honored the Lord by naming her son as an answer to prayer and later by keeping her vow by bringing Samuel to the high priest and leaving him there to serve God his whole life.

Ask your children what they are praying hard for?  Do they expect God to answer even if they have been praying a long time?  What will they do to honor God when He answers?  Make a plan together with them as if God has already answered.  That is what faith looks like.  Trusting God before He answers.
