Background: After the nation of Israel conquered their Promised Land, Joshua and the people divided it up amongst the 12 tribes in obedience to God. Now comes the end of Joshua’s life. He is 110 years old and calls the people together one last time to warn them that they need to keep obeying God if they want to enjoy His blessings. Then he makes one of the most famous statements in the Bible.
Ask the children…
What did Joshua say?
“But as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15)
After Joshua challenged all the tribes and families of Israel to follow the Lord, he spoke about his own personal commitment to ‘practice what he preached’. His family was going to keep on serving the Lord.
Ask your children what it looks like for a family to serve the Lord? What kind of things will that family be about? Now do the hard work and compare your family to that. Is your family serving the Lord? Determine one area where you can improve and make it a family project to ‘serve the Lord’ in this area. Ask God together to give you the passion, wisdom and strength to do it. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t succeed at first. It takes time to develop new habits.
