Background: After the nation of Israel took control of the Promised Land, Joshua their leader died and the 12 tribes were left to completely conquer their remaining enemies in the lands they had been allotted.
Ask the children…
What did the tribes do wrong?
“The tribe of Benjamin, however, failed to drive out the Jebusites, who were living in Jerusalem..” (Judges 1:21)
“The tribe of Manasseh failed to drive out the people living in Beth-shan,[e] Taanach, Dor, Ibleam, Megiddo, and all their surrounding settlements.” (Judges 1:27)
“The tribe of Ephraim failed to drive out the Canaanites living in Gezer.” (Judges 1:29)
God had told the nation through Joshua to completely drive out all the nations living in their land. God knew that these enemy nations would draw the Israelites away to serve pagan gods. And they did.
As a result God no longer fought for Israel and they were defeated by their enemies.
Ask the children where they are not completely obeying God? In their chores, homework, how they treat their friends and family, telling the truth. Have them write it down on a piece of paper (or help them if they are too young) and then crumple up the paper and throw it away. As they do, have them repeat, I _______ will completely follow the Lord in _______ by the power Jesus has given me with His Holy Spirit.
