This one year study thru the Bible for kids is designed to hit the highlights and provide practical application. I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Judges 6-8 ) while I focus in on just a few verses.
Background: After the nation of Israel took control of the Promised Land, Joshua their leader died and the 12 tribes were left to completely conquer their remaining enemies in the lands they had been allotted. The 12 tribes fell away from worshipping God and God therefore allowed their enemies to defeat them. When Israel finally cried out to God for help, God sent Judges (leaders) to help them. One of these Judges was named Gideon and he wasn’t exactly what we would think of as leader material.
Ask the children…
How qualified did Gideon feel for being a Judge (leader)?
“‘But Lord,’ Gideon replied, ‘how can I rescue Israel? My clan is the weakest in the whole tribe of Manasseh, and I am the least in my entire family!’” (Judges 6:15)
So Gideon say himself as the least of the least. Do you ever feel that way?
How did God view Gideon’s abilities? Why was God confident that Gideon could lead?
“The angel of the Lord appeared to him and said, “Mighty hero, the Lord is with you!” (Judges 6:12)
The important thing here wasn’t how Gideon viewed himself and his circumstances, but how God viewed Gideon and that fact that God would be with Gideon as he led the people. God saw Gideon as a “Mighty Hero”.
God can see in us things that we can’t see in ourselves. Every one of us is a “Mighty Hero” in God’s eyes. Why? Because Jesus lives inside each of us and God has uniquely gifted each of us to do those marvelous things He has picked out for us to do .
Read Ephesians 2:10 with your children. Tell them that you too think they are God’s masterpieces (God’s heroes). Ask your children what good works they think God has set out for them this week? You might have them close their eyes and repeat after you, “Holy Spirit, what good works do you have for me this week?” Then wait and see what the Holy Spirit says to them. Then make a plan to carry out those good works and rejoice that they are a “Mighty Hero” of God like Gideon.
