One Year Thru The Bible For Kids – March 4th, Joshua 14

This one year study thru the Bible for kids is designed hit the highlights and provide practical application. I encourage you to read the whole section scripture (Joshua 14) while I focus in on just a few verses.

Background:  When the nation of Israel was conquering their Promised Land, there was one warrior who stood out above all the rest.  His name was Caleb.  40 years before, Moses had sent Caleb and 11 others to go into the Promised Land to spy out what was there.  Caleb and his friend Joshua had come back with a good report and urged his fellow Israelites to go in and take it because God was with them and would defeat their enemies.  Unfortunately the other 10 spies could only see the giants in the land and great walled cities and they persuaded the people not to trust God and go in.  As a result, that whole generation of adults died in the desert leaving only their children and Joshua and Caleb to go into the Land and conquer it.

Ask the children…

How old was Caleb?  How strong was he at that age?

“Today I am eighty-five years old. 11 I am as strong now as I was when Moses sent me on that journey, and I can still travel and fight as well as I could then.”  (Joshua 14:10, 11)

What land did Caleb want?  What did He believe the Lord would do?

“So give me the hill country that the Lord promised me. You will remember that as scouts we found the descendants of Anak living there in great, walled towns. But if the Lord is with me, I will drive them out of the land, just as the Lord said.”  (Joshua 14:12)

Caleb wanted the difficult hill country where giants lived.  He was confident that no matter how big the giants, God would drive them out when Caleb went up to fight them.

Ask your children what GIANTS there are in their lives they are afraid to fight?  Ask them how they would feel if they knew Jesus was right there with them fighting for them?  Remind them that Jesus said “I will be with you always”.  Have your children declare out loud, like Caleb, that God will win the battle over their giants.
