Today let’s focus on a Bible miracle from the book of Matthew: Peter walks on the water (Matthew 14:22-36; Mark 6:45-54; John 6:15-21)
Teaching children about the Bible miracles is important because it helps them to see how nothing is impossible for God. If God can do miracles in the Bible, He can do them in our children’s lives today. Here is an easy way to do that interactively.
While the disciples were laboring in a boat far out on a lake in the middle of the night, a great storm had come and these hardened sailors cried out in fear. Jesus who had stayed on shore to pray, came to them walking on water. We are all aware of Jesus’ miraculous walking on water, but do we remember that there was a second person who walked on the water that night?
Ask the children…
Who was the second person who walked on the water?
“Then Peter called to him, ‘Lord, if it’s really you, tell me to come to you, walking on the water.’ ‘Yes, come,’ Jesus said. So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus.” (Matthew 14:28, 29)
What caused Peter to doubt and to start sinking?
“But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. ‘Save me, Lord!’ he shouted.” (Matthew 14:30)
Who was holding Peter up so he could walk on the water?
“Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him. ‘You have so little faith,’ Jesus said. ‘Why did you doubt me?'” (Matthew 14:31)
We can do miracles only because Jesus is doing them through us. But it is an act of faith by which we appropriate the power of Jesus to overcome the natural laws by the divine super natural laws.
Peter’s problem was that his view of the natural, the wind and the waves, got in the way of his view of the supernatural, Jesus. Ask your children what natural things get in the way of their seeing Jesus operate in their day to day lives. What fears overwhelm them? Then come alongside your children just like Jesus did with Peter, and pray together for the supernatural faith that Jesus will provide.
