Teaching Children About Bible Miracles – Miracle Of The Locust Plague

Joel, Locust

Teaching children about the Bible miracles is important because it helps them to see how nothing is impossible for God.  If God can do miracles in the Bible, He can do them in our children’s lives today.  Here is an easy way to do that interactively.

Today let’s focus on a Bible miracle from the book of Joel:   The miracle of divine judgment through the locust plague. (Joel 1)

Joel was a prophet to God’s People of the southern kingdom Judah.  God had made them prosperous and they had become complacent towards God, taking Him for granted.  Joel was called to warn them that a lifestyle of selfishness, idolatry and sin would ultimately lead to God’s judgment.  Let’s see how God got His people’s attention.

Ask the children…

What did God bring upon His people to get their attention about the desperate situation they were in?

“After the cutting locusts finished eating the crops, the swarming locusts took what was left!  After them came the hopping locusts, and then the stripping locusts too!”  (Joel 1:4)

What did Joel tell the people, was the proper response to this devastation?

“Wake up, you drunkards and weep!  Wail, all you wine drinkers!  All the grapes are ruined, and all your sweet wine is gone”. (Joel 1:5)

God had stripped bare their land of everything.  Grapes and wine were the symbols of blessing and God’s presence.  When He took these away, the people knew this was God’s judgment and it was time to weep and wail and repent of their wicked ways.

Isn’t it amazing that God cared so much about His people, that He would get their attention through this miraculous plague of locusts?

God is constantly looking to get our attention when we stray so we can come back to Him and enjoy His presence and blessing.
