Teaching Children About Bible Miracles – The Plant That Grew Overnight And Then Died And The Storm All For Jonah

Jonah and the plant

Teaching children about the Bible miracles is important because it helps them to see how nothing is impossible for God.  If God can do miracles in the Bible, He can do them in our children’s lives today.  Here is an easy way to do that interactively.

Today let’s focus on a Bible miracle from the book of Jonah:   The plant that grew overnight to shade Jonah and then died and the storm. (Jonah 4)

Jonah had been called by God to go and preach repentance to Nineveh, the capital city of Israel’s arch enemy, Assyria.  Jonah hated the Assyrians and fled from God by getting on a ship that was headed for Tarshish.  God caused a great storm to arise and the only way to stop it from destroying the ship and everyone on it was to throw Jonah overboard.  When the sailors did this, the storm stopped.

A great fish swallowed Jonah and after 3 days and nights spit him on the shore near Nineveh.  Jonah preached to the Ninevites and they repented.  Jonah was so angry that he asked God to kill him because he still hated the Ninevites.

Ask the children…

What did God do ease Jonah’s pain and how did Jonah respond?

“God arranged for a broad-leafed tree to spring up.  It grew over Jonah to cool him off and get him out of his angry sulk. Jonah was pleased and enjoyed the shade.”  (Jonah 4:6)

What miracle did God do next to teach Jonah a lesson?

“God then sent a worm.  By dawn the next day, the worm had bored into the shade tree and it had withered away.  The sun came up and God sent a hot, blistering wind from the east.  The sun beat down on Jonah’s head and he started to faint.  He prayed to die: ‘I’m better off dead’.” (Jonah 4:7-8 )

In the end God told Jonah that miracles of the shade tree and the hot wind illustrated that Jonah had more compassion for the death of a plant that he had not caused to grow than he did for 120,000 Ninevites.  God chose to have compassion on these Ninevites because they were his creation.   Who is God calling you to have compassion on? What does He want you to do for them?

Now you can see how Bible miracles are God’s way of blessing the world.  Glory to Him!!!
