Teaching Kids Key Life Learnings from 100 Biblical Characters: No. 29 – Caleb

Caleb Strong and Good

What practical key life learnings can we glean from the life of Caleb?

Context (Joshua 14:6-15):  Caleb was a faithful follower of God all his life.  As a 40 year old man he was chosen along with Joshua to be 2 of the 12 spies selected by Moses to enter the land.  They brought back a good report of a land flowing with milk and honey while the other spies could only think about the giants in the land.  After the desert wanderings, Caleb was a faithful warrior who helped God’s People defeat their enemies and take the Promised Land.  When he was 85 years old he told Joshua that he was ready to fulfill the prophecy that Moses has made over him that Caleb was supposed to go up and take the land that he had spied out some 45 years earlier.

Key Life Learnings:

  • Real strength comes from the Lord (Joshua 14:10-12):  God had preserved Caleb’s strength so that even as an 85 year old man he was just as strong as he was at 40 years of age.  He asked Joshua to give him the hill country where the giants lived because he believed that God was with him and together they would drive out these giants.  Now that is Faith with a capital ‘F’.  Caleb didn’t want the easy land so he could put his feet up and just retire from the battle.  He wanted to continue to live by faith and slay giants.  What about you?  Are you choosing the easy road because you think you can handle it on your own or are you looking for the giant opportunities that you can only conquer if God is with you?  Let’s live like Caleb and go in God’s strength whether we are 5 or 85 years old.
