Teaching Kids Key Life Learnings from 100 Biblical Characters: No. 45 – Abner

Abner Bible Character

What practical key life learnings can we glean from the life of Abner?

Context (2 Samuel 2, 3):  Abner was the commander of the armies of king Saul and later Saul’s son Ishobosheth.  Ishobosheth was a weak king and Abner left him and became the leader of rival David’s army.  He recognized that God had anointed David to become the next king.

Key Life Learnings:

It is critical to Listen to God for His direction (2 Samuel 3):  When Abner saw that Ishbosheth was a weak leader and realized that God had spoken over David that he would save God’s people from the Philistines and all their enemies, he saw that his previous allegiance to Saul’s family was over and his allegiance was now to the Davidic dynasty.

It is important for us to realize that there are times when we should change.  When Jesus called His disciples from their lives of fishing, tax collecting, etc., they had to change their minds and lives in order to follow after Him.  Where is God calling you to make a change in your life?  It is not easy for any of us to change, but we need to be ready to follow God’s leading.
