When trying to teach mercy to your kids it can be challenging. Why should you be merciful? Because God is a God of mercy.
“I am in great distress, let us fall into the hand of the Lord for his mercy is great…”(2 Sam. 24:14).
“Have mercy on us, Son of David”(Matt. 9:27).
“Father of mercies and God of all comfort”(2 Cor. 1:3).
God extended his mercy to all of us when His son took the punishment that we all deserved, because of our sin. When you think of how much mercy we have received it really makes you rethink our mercy towards others.
Try explaining this to your kids. Depending on their age, this can be more difficult. But if your kids are around 10, then you could ask them these questions?
Based on how much mercy we have received from God, ask your kids if they can think of a person that they could extend mercy to this week. It could be when someone at school accidentally tripped them at recess, and they do not get mad. Or maybe a friend forgot to return something that they borrowed. Get the discussion going and have fun as you ponder with them the many ways we can show God’s mercy.
