Today let’s focus on a Bible miracle from the book of Mark. An angel came and rolled away the great stone in front of Jesus’ tomb (Matthew 28:1-10; Mark 16:1-11; Luke 24:1-12; John 20:1-18).
Notice how all four gospel writers recorded the resurrection of Jesus. It must be one of the most important incidents in His life, and it was. The resurection makes all the difference in the world. Let’s look at one of the miracles that surrounded it, the rolling away of the stone.
Ask the children…
Who was preparing to go to the tomb and what were they going to do?
“Saturday evening, when the Sabbath ended, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome went out and purchased burial spices so they could anoint Jesus’ body.” (Mark 16:1)
What problem were they discussing amongst themselves?
“Very early on Sunday morning, just at sunrise, they went to the tomb. On the way they were asking each other, ‘Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?’” (Mark 16:2, 3)
Who rolled away the stone?
“But as they arrived, they looked up and saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled aside. When they entered the tomb, they saw a young man (angel) clothed in a white robe sitting on the right side. The women were shocked,” (Mark 16:4, 5)
Here was an enormous stone that the Romans had placed in front of the tomb so that Jesus could not possibly get out and an angel had rolled it aside as if it was nothing. This miracle showed that all the power of the Roman government could not keep Christ from doing what He had been called to do.
Ask your children if Christ could have walked through the rock instead of having it rolled away? Ask them what they would have felt like had they seen this enormous stone rolled away and an angel waiting inside the tomb to greet them?
