The Big Idea Of Philippians Is The Believer’s Joy Of Overcoming Hard Time With Christ

Paul was overjoyed by the church in Philippi and how they were following Christ.

Paul wrote this letter from a prison cell in Rome.  Amazingly, he remained joyful because Jesus was with him and he was seeing people come to Christ even from jail.

Circumstances can steal our joy if we let them.  Paul’s joy was not dependent upon circumstances, but upon his faith in Jesus.

Paul planted the Philippian church and had been there several times.  He writes that he is so thankful for their work with him in the ministry of Jesus.

Paul also writes that their strength to live the  Christian life can only be found when they have a relationship with Jesus.  In Christ they can overcome fear, selfishness, pride and anxiety.  Not only can they overcome, but they can do it with joy no matter what their circumstance.

Key New Testament Kids Application:

  1. Daily we all run into tough circumstances. We can either let them get us down and rule our emotions or we can find our joy and strength in Jesus.  Read Philippians 1:12-14 with your kids.  Ask your kids how they would have felt in Paul’s circumstance.  What was Paul’s response?  Why?  Ask them what circumstance  they are struggling with and what is another way they could look at it?
