Today let’s focus on a Bible miracle from the book of Matthew: The coin in the fish’s mouth (Matthew 17:24-27)
Teaching children about the Bible miracles is important because it helps them to see how nothing is impossible for God. If God can do miracles in the Bible, He can do them in our children’s lives today. Here is an easy way to do that interactively.
Here again we have another miracle that baffles our minds. Peter was confronted with a question designed to undermine Jesus’ authority.
Ask the children…
What question was Peter asked?
“On their arrival in Capernaum, the collectors of the Temple tax came to Peter and asked him, ‘Doesn’t your teacher pay the Temple tax?’” (Matthew 17:24)
The Temple tax was a half shekel that every Israelite male above 20 years old had to pay. It would be customary for Jesus to pay this. However this raised a larger question about who Jesus really was. What did Jesus ask Peter when He heard about this?
“’Jesus asked him, ‘What do you think, Peter? Do kings tax their own people or the people they have conquered?’” (Matthew 17:25)
What Jesus was getting at was that citizens of a country are not taxed, but foreigners are taxed. In the same way, Jesus, who is the Lord, should not be taxed for His own temple. He should be free from this tax. But Jesus does not rely on His freedom from the tax, He does something amazing. What was that?
“‘However, we don’t want to offend them, so go down to the lake and throw in a line. Open the mouth of the first fish you catch, and you will find a large silver coin. Take it and pay the tax for both of us.’” (Matthew 17:27)
Jesus miraculously directed Peter to go catch a fish and the first one he caught would not only have a coin in its mouth, but the correct amount to pay the tax. Amazing!!! Jesus is not only Lord of the Temple, but Lord of all creation.
Ask your children if Jesus can make a fish with a coin in its mouth jump into Peter’s net, is there anything He can’t do?
