Today let’s focus on teaching kids a Bible miracle from the book of John. The last miracle on earth by Jesus before His ascension. (John 21:1-13)
On this third appearance of Jesus to His disciples after His resurrection, we find Jesus on the shore of the sea of Teberias. There were 7 of the disciples there and they had been fishing all night and had caught nothing. Let’s see this last miracle of Jesus here on earth.
Ask the children…
When Jesus heard from the disciples that they had fished all night and had caught nothing, what did Jesus ask them to do and what happened?
“Then he said, ‘Throw out your net on the right-hand side of the boat, and you’ll get some!’ So they did, and they couldn’t haul in the net because there were so many fish in it.” (John 21:6 )
What did the disciples realize after they had caught so many fish and what did Peter do?
“Then the disciple Jesus loved said to Peter, ‘It’s the Lord!’ When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his tunic (for he had stripped for work), jumped into the water, and headed to shore.” (John 21:7)
How many fish did they catch?
“‘Bring some of the fish you’ve just caught,’ Jesus said. 11 So Simon Peter went aboard and dragged the net to the shore. There were 153 large fish, and yet the net hadn’t torn.” (John 21:10, 11)
Jesus showed His power in His resurrection but also in the miracles He did after the resurrection. Here the disciples had fished all night using every trick they knew but had caught nothing. But at the word of the Lord they let down their nets and caught 153 fish. Where had those fish been before? We don’t know, but we do know that Jesus even commanded the fish as to where they were to go and what to do.
Jesus had told His disciples that He would make them fishers of men. But they would not be able to do this until the Holy Spirit had come upon them. How symbolic that the disciples could not catch any fish on their own and with the power of Jesus they caught 153 fish.
Ask your children if they can hear the Lord’s voice telling them what to do? If not, show them how God speaks to us through His word, prayer, circumstances and other people. Ask them if there is anything God is asking them to do today?
