Today let’s focus on teaching kids a Bible miracle from the book of Acts. The Holy Spirit comes upon the 120 in the upper room. (Acts 2:1-13).
After Jesus had ascended to heaven, He sent to disciples the gift of the Holy Spirit just as He has promised. Let’s see what this miracle of the giving of the Holy Spirit was all about.
Ask the children…
What was the first sign that the Holy Spirit had come?
“On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place. 2 Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting.” (Acts 2:1, 2)
Wind has always been used in the Bible as a sign of the presence of God. Sometimes it is a quiet wind and sometimes a mighty wind. In this case the Holy Spirit brought a mighty wind that filled the whole house. The Holy Spirit came with power and came to everyone and could fill up everything. What else happened at the same time?
“Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them.” (Acts 2:3)
Fire has been used in the Bible to show God’s presence and power. Remember how the Moses turned aside to the burning bush that was not consumerd and God spoke to him. Notice how the flames of fire settled on each of them. Each person was given the Holy Spirit. All 120, not just the 11 disciples (Judas Iscariot was gone). What did the Holy Spirit cause each of them to to do?
“And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.” (Acts 2:4)
Every one of them could speak in another language that they did not know and all the people who had come to Jersalem for the Passover were hearing them speak in their own language. They were amazed. This was impossible. No, this was the work of the Holy Spirit of God.
Ask your children if they believe they are filled with the Holy Spirit? Ask them if they realized the power that lives inside of them? Ask them what difference this power could make in their life and what they need this power for today? Pray with them and ask the Holy Spirit to empower them just like He did the disciples on the day of Pentecost and then praise God for the Holy Spirit.
