2 Corinthians 5:17 is a favorite children’s bible memory verse, but how many know the story behind this verse?
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!”
Paul wrote this second letter to the Corinthian church to express his joy over being able to minister with them.
This letter was written about 6 months after 1 Corinthians. Paul was preparing to come back and visit the Corinthians.
Paul had a passion for helping people get their relationship with God right. In this portion of 2 Corinthians he encourages the Corinthians realize that Christ’s death and resurrection and their participation in that through faith changes everything.
They aren’t to see one another through earthly eyes that only see the outward appearance. They were to see what people had truly become on the inside.
In 2 Corinthians 5:17, Paul wrote that being in Christ meant that they were now new creations. All the sin, all the guilt, all the old evil ways had been paid for and they were now new creations. They have been brought close to God and have been radically changed.
What an amazing verse this is to tell us that we are a new creation. Even more of a miracle than our physical birth is our spiritual birth.
Now you know the story behind 2 Corinthians 5:17.
