Top 100 Children’s Bible Memory Verses: Christ Became Sin For Us – The Story Behind 2 Corinthians 5:21

2 Corinthians 5:21 is a favorite children’s bible memory verse, but how many know the story behind this verse?

God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.”

Paul wrote this second letter to the Corinthian church to express his joy over being able to minister with them.

This letter was written about 6 months after 1 Corinthians.  Paul was preparing to come back and visit the Corinthians.

Paul encouraged the Corinthians to be reconciled to God and as ambassadors to encourage others to be reconciled to God.  Christ was on earth reconciling the world to Himself and not counting their sins against them.

In 2 Corinthians 5:21, Paul wrote that Christ was sinless and sins of the whole world were laid on Him.  Therefore, the sin of mankind had been taken away and for those who trust in Christ they have been given as a free gift the righteousness of Christ.
