1 John 1:9 is a favorite bible memory verse, but how many know the story behind this verse?
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
John was one of Jesus’ disciples. 1, 2 and 3 John were written by John to no particular church but sent out broadly to believers everywhere.
John wrote 1 John to assure the believers of God’s love for them. God loves them like little children. John also warned them about false teachers who had come among them teaching that Jesus was not the God and did not die to save them from their sins.
In the first chapter reminds the Christians that God is holy and God provided a way to keep the believers holy as well. False teachers were saying that there was no such thing as sin. But John says that sin is real and that Christ died to cleanse them from sin. In fact, John wrote, if they say they have no sin, they are liars.
In 1 John 1:9, John tells the believers that the way to deal with sin is to confess it to God. Tell God what they had done wrong. Then they would experience God’s forgiveness and holiness. This was the way to remain in fellowship with God.
