Philippians 4: 6, 7 is a favorite bible memory verse, but how many know the story behind the verse?
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus”.
Paul was a great missionary and went around planting churches everywhere. This particular letter he wrote to the church in Philippi. Paul had planted this church on his second missionary journey.
Paul had reason to be anxious. Paul was writing this letter to the Philippians from a Roman prison. The Philippians were anxious over Paul’s imprisonment. In addition to Paul’s present imprisonment, he had experienced hunger, danger and persecution numerous times.
Therefore Paul implores the Philippians not to be anxious about these things but to turn them over to God through prayer. God can and will handle all their troubles. In place of the anxiety, God will put His perfect peace which can be found only through trusting in Christ.
