Romans 6:23 is a favorite children’s bible memory verse, but how many know the story behind this verse?
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Paul was a great missionary and went around planting churches everywhere. This particular letter he wrote to the church in Rome. Surprisingly he had never been there. The church was planted by those who had come to Christ and then went to Rome and started a church.
Paul wrote to encourage them and to give them a proper foundation in their faith.
In the first part of Romans, Paul had been telling the Romans ‘What to Believe’. In the second part beginning in chapter 12, he writes to them about ‘How to Behave’.
Paul wrote in Romans 6 to remind the Romans that they had been set free from sin and were now living under grace. He told them not to live as though you were still sinners or think that because God is gracious they can continue to sin. The ultimate truth that Paul provides in v. 23 is that sin leads to death (separation from God) but God freely gives everlasting life (eternity with God) through Jesus. Now that is worth living for!
