“For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
Paul was a great missionary and went around planting churches everywhere. This particular letter he wrote to the church in Philippi. Paul had planted this church on his second missionary journey.
Paul was writing this letter from a jail cell. Instead of feeling discouraged, he was rejoicing that his imprisonment has given him the opportunity to share Jesus with the Roman soldiers assigned to guard him.
In the introduction to this letter, Paul greeted and encouraged the Philippians for their participation in the work of the gospel from the very beginning. Even from his jail cell, Paul encouraged them.
In Philippians 1:6 Paul expressed his confidence that while they were working that Christ would carry on His work in the Philippians as well until He returns.
This is a great comfort and encouragement to all of us who become weary of doing our daily tasks and feel as though we are not making progress. We can rely on Christ to continue to do His work of transformation to change us into His image.
Now you know the story behind Philippians 1:6.
