“If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”
Paul was a great missionary and went around planting churches everywhere. This particular letter he wrote to the church in Rome. Surprisingly he had never been there. The church was planted by those who had come to Christ and then went to Rome and started a church.
Paul wrote to encourage them and to give them a proper foundation in their faith.
In Romans 10 Paul pointed out that God’s chosen people (the Israelites) were setting an improper foundation. They were trying to achieve righteousness before God based upon their works and keeping the Law.
They did not understand that Christ had fulfilled all the Law and by grace offered a free gift of salvation to all.
In Romans 10:9 Paul explained that all that was required to receive this free gift of salvation was to confess that Jesus is the Lord of one’s life and to believe that Jesus overcame sin and death and therefore by implication had opened the doorway for all to receive forgiveness and eternal life with Him.
Now you know the story behind Romans 10:9.
