John 13:34 is a favorite children’s Bible memory verse, but how many know the story behind this verse?
“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.”
John was one of Jesus’ disciples. He wrote this book to prove that Jesus was in fact God come here to earth to save people from their sins.
I am writing on Thursday of Holy Week. The day that Jesus went up into the upper room to share the Passover meal with His disciples. He knew that He would soon be betrayed, tried, scourged and hung on a cross for the sins of men.
Before this intimate meal with His disciples, Jesus washes and dries their feet as the lowliest servant in a house would do in that day.
What a beautiful portrayal of John 13:34. This is what it means to love one another, to serve others and to give to them without regard for our station in life.
Now you know the story behind John 13:34.
