John 16:33 is a favorite children’s bible memory verse, but how many know the story behind this verse?
“I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
John was one of Jesus’ disciples. He wrote this book to prove that Jesus was in fact God come here to earth to save people from their sins.
In John 16, Jesus was teaching His disciples that He would not always be among them. He did not want them to be surprised or to grieve that this happened, because Jesus had predicted it. None of this was a surprise to Him.
He told them that when He was being killed, His Father would be with Him even though the disciples would scatter out of fear.
In all this, Jesus spoke a word of encouragement to the disciples in John 16:33, that they should not be troubled, but instead they could be at peace. Why? Because even though the world would appear to have won this round of the battle, the fact was that Jesus had overcome the world in His death and resurrection. He was the victor.
The same victory He had in this troubled world, they could have as well. They could hang onto this at all times.
