1 Peter 3:15 is a favorite children’s bible memory verse, but how many know the story behind this verse?
“But in your hearts, set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.”
Peter wrote to a broad group of Christians who were experiencing suffering for their faith. Instead of feeling bad about it, Peter encourages them to rejoice. Why rejoice? Because they are sharing in the sufferings of Jesus.
Peter knew that when God’s people remained joyful even during intense suffering, their friends and neighbors were going to ask them how they could do this. 1 Peter 3:15 is Peter’s instruction to God’s people to be ready to tell anyone that their hope is due to their confidence in God’s plan for their lives.
Let’s get ourselves and our children ready to tell our story. Have them write their story out (2 minutes long at the most) and rehearse it together. Pray that God provides opportunities to share it.
