Top 100 Children’s Bible Memory Verses: Overcoming Timidity – The Story Behind 2 Timothy 1:7

Timothy and Paul

Timothy and Paul

2 Timothy 1:7 is a favorite children’s bible memory verse, but how many know the story behind this verse?

For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.”

Paul wrote to his young associate Timothy to teach him how to lead the church.

When Paul went on from the church of Ephesus, he left Timothy behind to lead the work.  This was a giant task because Timothy was still a relatively young man.

Of course Timothy would have a tendency to be timid since he was a young man.  The people in the church were older and they would be comparing Timothy to Paul.

Paul gave Timothy these words in 2 Timothy 1:7 to encourage him in his ministry.  God’s Spirit within him was not a timid Spirit, it was powerful and loving and internally strong.

Timothy didn’t have to fear anyone or anything because Jesus Spirit’ was living inside him and it didn’t matter how old he was.  He was God’s man for this job and God had provided what he needed.
