Acts 1:8 is a favorite children’s bible memory verse, but how many know the story behind this verse?
“And you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Luke wrote the book of Acts to provide the historical account of coming of the Holy Spirit after Jesus ascension into heaven and how the Holy Spirit empowered the beginning and expansion of the church.
Acts begins with the final days of Jesus with the disciples and Jesus’ direction for the disciples to wait for the Holy Spirit to come after which Jesus ascends into heaven.
Jesus knew that the disciples did not have the power to do the work that He was calling them to do. Therefore just before He was taken up into heaven, He instructed His disciples to wait for the coming of the Holy Spirit.
Why, because when the Holy Spirit came, the disciples would have the power they needed to go into all the world and proclaim the message of Christ’s love for them.
