Colossians 3:12 is a favorite children’s bible memory verse, but how many know the story behind this verse?
“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved ones, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.”
Paul wrote this letter to the Colossians to remind them that nothing compares to Christ, He is first in all things.
Some evil teachers had come into the Colossian church and persuaded them that there were things more important than Christ. Things like keeping the Law, traditions of men and the worship of angels.
In chapter 3 of Colossians, Paul reminded the Colossians of their new life in Christ and how they were to set their minds on heavenly things, not earthly things. They had been given a special relationship with God and now they can think and act like it.
In Colossians 3:12 Paul wrote that the Colossians had been selected by God to be holy and loved here on this earth and beyond. So in keeping with this selection, the Colossians were to live lives of mercy and kindness and patience.
Now you know the story behind Colossians 3:12.
