Matthew 11:28-30 are favorite children’s bible memory verses, but how many know the story behind these verses?
“Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
Matthew, also called Levi, had been a hated Jewish tax collector until He met Jesus and his world was turned upside down. From then on Matthew became a devoted disciple of Jesus.
Matthew wrote to convince the Jews that Jesus was in fact the promised Messiah they had been waiting for.
Jesus was teaching the multitudes about the kingdom of God and how different it is than the world. The world puts people under bondage to keep the Law and work for righteousness.
Jesus wanted the disciples to know that the kingdom requirements were quite different. In fact, Jesus told them in Matthew 11:28-30 that when they felt weighed down by burdens of the world’s demands, that they could come to Him and He would provide the rest they really needed, inside in their souls.
When we pull together with Jesus in this life, although the work may be hard, but our souls will feel as light as a feather.
