“For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him.”
John was one of Jesus’ disciples. He wrote this book to prove that Jesus was in fact God come here to earth to save people from their sins.
In John 3 Jesus is having an evening encounter with Nicodemus. Nicodemus was a Pharisee (religious leader) and a ruler of the Jews. The Pharisees were the keepers of the Law and told God’s people (The Jews) how they were supposed to live or they would be judged.
Nicodemus wanted to know how Jesus could do all of these signs and wonders He doing. Was Jesus from God?
Jesus didn’t answer Nicodemus’ question but guided Nicodemus into a more significant discussion about his own relationship with God. It was about being “born again” and heavenly truths.
Then Jesus tells Nicodemus in v.16 (perhaps the most famous verse in the Bible) that salvation and everlasting life comes to all who believe in Jesus. Jesus is God’s son, whom God sent because of His love.
The Pharisees were hung up on judgment for not keeping the Law and Jesus addresses this in verse 17. Jesus didn’t come to condemn and judge, He came to save.
Jesus addresses the Pharisee in all of us with this verse. God doesn’t judge us based upon our works, but freely provides grace and mercy through His Son, Jesus.
