Romans 12:1 is a favorite bible memory verse, but how many know the story behind the verse?
“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.”
Paul was a great missionary and went around planting churches everywhere. This particular letter he wrote to the church in Rome. Surprisingly he had never been there. The church was planted by those who had come to Christ and then went to Rome and started a church.
Paul wrote to encourage them and to give them a proper foundation in their faith.
In the first part of Romans, Paul had been telling the Romans ‘What to Believe’. In this second part beginning in chapter 12, he writes to them about ‘How to Behave’.
In light of all the wonderful mercies Paul had pointed out in the first 12 chapters of Romans, Paul encouraged the Romans to give their bodies to God. No longer were they to sacrifice animals for worship as in the Old Testament, now they were to offer themselves as daily “living sacrifices”.
Now you know the story behind Romans 12:1.
